Canon Medical Systems Corporation (Canon Medical; headquarters: Otawara City, Tochigi, Japan; president & CEO: Toshio Takiguchi) and The Pokémon Company (Pokémon; headquarters: Minato City, Tokyo, Japan; president and CEO: Tsunekazu Ishihara) collaborated to produce a video explaining a pediatric MRI examination called えむ・あーる・あい(MRI)のけんさだよ!(It’s an M R I Examination!), which was released on YouTube.
The video is also available on the Canon Medical website and the website for The 57th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society of Pediatric Radiology . The video was created from the perspective of a child undergoing an MRI examination and is designed to convey the atmosphere of an actual examination by using realistic sounds, 360-degree camera images, and simple explanations using easy words. In addition, since children can enjoy listening to the precautions related to MRI examinations alongside their beloved Pokémon, parents can expect their children to come to understand the precautions on their own.
In MRI examinations for small children, it is difficult for them to stay still due to the long examination time and the noises peculiar to MRI systems. It is possible to use sedatives, but that is not without risk.
For pediatric examinations, it is important to explain the details of the examination in advance and in an easy-to-understand way (emotional preparation), so that the child will have their own understanding of what will take place during the examination.
The video was re-edited based on a video created in August of last year in cooperation with the Japanese Society of Pediatric Radiology and the Kanagawa Children’s Medical Center.
The video was created with the assumption that children and their families could watch it together so that the child could undergo an MRI examination with some peace of mind. It is also intended as a support tool for doctors explaining MRI examinations at their medical facility. Canon Medical is committed to supporting the field of pediatric medical care, in which people work hard every day to protect our next generation – the precious lives of the children.
